World Mayor, an annual project organized by City Mayors, intends to raise the profile of mayors worldwide, as well as honor those who have served their communities well and who have contributed to the well-being of cities, nationally and internationally. Above all, World Mayor wants to show the world what great mayors can achieve.

City Mayors is an international network of professionals who work together to promote strong cities and good local government. It examines how city mayors, and others who govern metropolitan areas, develop innovative solutions to long-standing urban problems such as housing, transport, education and employment, but also how they meet the latest environmental, technological, social and security challenges, which affect the well-being of their citizens.

Cities and their people create wealth. Business, global and local, is the catalyst in urban wealth creation. City Mayors works for a harmonious and fruitful relationship between cities and business.

In this century, metropolitan areas, rather than nation states, will shape the world’s social, cultural, technological and economic agendas. This process will lead to increased competition for human, intellectual and material resources but, also, force cities to cooperate with and learn from one another. City Mayors promotes constructive competition and acts as a forum for cooperation and communication between cities.

Successful cities require strong and resourceful mayors and administrations. City Mayors backs demands to give municipal government increased power and authority as well as additional resources.

Each year the most outstanding mayor is presented with the World Mayor Award. In 2004 the Award was won by Edi Rama, Mayor of Tirana. Dora Bakoyannis, Mayor of Athens, is the winner of the 2005 World Mayor Award.

Between now and June, City Mayors is seeking nominations of outstanding mayors from all parts of the world who should be among the finalists of the 2006 World Mayor contest. The organizers are looking for exceptional mayors from small and large cities who have the passionate support of their communities and have won respect nationally and internationally. The names of the finalists will be published in June 2006. The final round will run from June until the end of October 2006. The winner of World Mayor 2006 will be announced in early December 2006.
